Rose honor revoked by SUNY

Albany
State University of New York officials have revoked an honorary award given to television host Charlie Rose over sexual harassment allegations.
The Daily News reports that SUNY Board of Trustees voted Tuesday to revoke the doctor of humane letters degree that Rose received from SUNY Oswego in 2014.
Rose was fired by CBS, and PBS cut ties with him after several women accused him of unwanted sexual advances.

Commisso resigned from his 25-year reign as head of the legislature's Democrats on Thursday.

 

Protesters put Confederate flags on museum jockey statues

Saratoga SpringsMore than a dozen lawn jockeys—painted in elegant racing silks and pale peach skin— in front of the National Museum of Racing were hung with Confederate flags Tuesday night before dawn. Someone who claims to be a participant emailed a local TV station to describe the action as a protest against symbols of slavery. The museum removed the flags immediately. And emphatically disputes the protesters' premise.

Jobless rates across upstate now top those of U.S.

Unemployment climbed across upstate New York in December, with nearly all metropolitan areas posting rates higher than the national rate of 3.9 percent.The Capital Region's unemployment rate rose 0.3 percentage points to 4.2 percent of the workforce. Only New York City posted a decline, to 3.9 percent from 4.4 percent in December 2016.The strongest job markets were to be found in the eastern part of the state. Of the 11 counties statewide with unemployment rates at or below 4.1 percent, only one — Tompkins County — was outside the Hudson Valley/New York City region.

 

Proposed state work schedule rules draw criticism, suppport

AlbanyIndustry groups appear divided over proposed state rules that would require more pay to workers for last-minute shift changes.On Tuesday, the Business Council of New York, an industry lobbying group, urged the state Labor Department to scrap its proposals and have the issue instead addressed by state lawmakers."This rule would impose challenging administrative compliance burdens on many employers, and would prove nearly impossible to deal with for some sectors," wrote Frank Kerbein, director of the council's Center for Human Resources.
