N.Y. appeals court backs married lesbian couple's parental rights

ALBANY -- A man who donated sperm to a married lesbian couple has no right to demand a genetic test to assert his claim to be their child's father, a state appeals court determined Thursday, overturning the determination of a Family Court in the Southern Tier. Delving into an emerging area of law, a five-judge panel of the Appellate Division of state Supreme Court unanimously affirmed the couple's right through their legal marriage to be the presumed parents of the child, and stated further that a genetic test would not be in the child's best interests.

Chad Brown wins Eclipse Award as top trainer

Trainer Chad Brown dominated the horse racing calendar in 2017. So it was only fitting that he dominated the Eclipse Awards, which were presented on Thursday night at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale, Fla.
Brown, 39, was a runaway winner of the Eclipse Award as the nation's best trainer. He received 215 of a possible 250 votes en route to his second consecutive Eclipse Award. Hall of Fame trainers Bob Baffert (16 votes) and Steve Asmussen (13) finished second and third. Mark Casse and Todd Pletcher each received two votes.

 

State ready to deal with possible flooding

The governor announced Thursday that he is dispatching teams of state officials to assess nearly 50 ice jams and flooded areas in the state.Varying in size, the teams will be made up of officials from the state Department of Transportation, Department of Environmental Conservation, Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services and State Police, will in some cases use drones to identify other potential trouble spots.

 

McCoy aims to tackle rise in foster care children

In the last four years, Albany County has seen a 23 percent increase in children needing foster care because of parents suffering from opioid addiction, mental health issues or domestic violence.To tackle this rise, county Executive Daniel McCoy wants the county Department of Children, Youth & Family Services to create a task force that will focus on foster children to ensure they don't fall victim to the same challenges their parents suffered through.

Former deputy convicted of illegal gun sales

JOHNSTOWN - A former Fulton County deputy was convicted on Wednesday of illegally selling two pistols out of his former business, The Gun Store, in Perth, Saratoga County District Attorney Karen Heggen said.
