CEDAR RAPIDS — With all of the votes now counted, the Cedar Rapids Library Levy has fallen short of its required 50 percent vote. With 7,683 votes against and 6,306 votes for, the vote percentages for and against is 55 percent No to 45 percent Yes.Cedar Rapids voters have rejected a tax levy that would have helped fund the annual operation of the public library here and would have provided money for it to update its collection annually. The levy of 27 cents per $1,000 of taxable assessed property valuation would have cost the owner of a $150,000 home an extra $23 a year and the owner of a $1 million commercial property an extra $243 a year. The levy would have raised $1.6 million a year and will allow the library, with an annual budget of $6.3 million, to balance its budget without one-time emergency funding from the City Council.
