WILKES-BARRE — During 35 years as the school nurse at GAR High School, Cathy Okrasinski admits she’s experienced some dramatic moments — like the time a student nearly severed his fingers in shop class. “Kids were screaming, ‘Mrs. O!’ and blood was just spurting. He was going into shock.” Okrasinski applied pressure to the wound until the ambulance arrived and — though several of his fingers had been “just dangling,” attached only by skin — he had microsurgery and was able to use them again. That example of her quick action as a first responder may have taken place about 20 years ago, but she remembers it vividly. Okrasinski has been reminiscing a lot as she prepares to retire — and many of her memories show her colleagues are more than co-workers.
