Gusty offshore winds sweep across Southern California, killing couple

LOS ANGELES — Gusty winds sweeping across Southern California have toppled trees onto roads, cars and yards, killing at least two people, relatives and police said.
Offshore winds were gusting Tuesday in many mountain and valley areas, and periods of wind were expected to continue through the week, the National Weather Service said.
On Monday, winds toppled huge trees in neighborhoods across Los Angeles and Orange counties.

Authorities search for missing man

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office is searching for a man who has been missing since 10 a.m. Monday.
Thurmal Mallory was last seen leaving his home in a black Honda CRV and headed toward Winco Foods in Hazel Dell, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office. Mallory, who is known to be confused and forgetful, did not return home.

 

Everson man searching for owner of dog tags he found in estate sale purchase

BELLINGHAM — While at an estate sale with his mother last weekend along Marine Drive, Jerome Tom stumbled across a pair of army boots.
“I was looking at them, and then I looked down and noticed an old army backpack,” the 41-year-old Everson resident told The Bellingham Herald in an interview Thursday. “My dad was in the military, and I liked the backpack, and my mom said to get it.”

 

Washington state electors challenge fine for anti-Trump bid

SEATTLE — Three Democratic presidential electors from Washington state who joined a longshot effort to deny Donald Trump the presidency in 2016 are challenging the $1,000 fines they received for breaking their pledge to support their party’s nominee.
The three agreed to support Hillary Clinton in the Electoral College after Clinton won the popular vote in Washington.
Instead, they joined some other electors from around the country in casting votes for Republican Colin Powell. The plan failed to deny Trump a majority.
