Wood stove cause of fire at Orchards-area home

An early Sunday morning fire that ripped through an Orchards-area home was ignited when an unpermitted wood stove overheated and burned through the floor of a shed, according to the Clark County Fire Marshal’s Office.
“The shed burned quickly, and the fire spread to the first and second floors, even the attic of the home,” Deputy Fire Marshal Caleb Barnes said.

 

WSU plans to open Steve Gleason Institute in Spokane later this year

SPOKANE (AP) — Washington State University in Spokane is creating the Steve Gleason Institute for Neuroscience to develop care and cures for brain disease. The Gleason Institute is expected to open in Spokane in the second half of this year.
Daryll DeWald, chancellor of WSU Health Sciences Spokane, announced the project on Tuesday.
He says the Gleason Institute will have WSU researchers working with health care providers to bridge the gaps between care and potential treatments of neuro-degenerative diseases.

 

Final defendant sentenced in Bundy standoff in Nevada

LAS VEGAS — Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy’s bodyguard in confrontations with U.S. land management agents became the last of 19 defendants from 11 states to be sentenced on Tuesday in an armed standoff nearly five years ago.
Brian “Booda” Cavalier, 47, of Mesa, Ariz., was told he won’t serve any more time than the 20 months he spent in federal custody between his arrest in early 2016 and his guilty plea in October 2017 to two charges of conspiracy to impede and injure a federal officer.

 

Girls basketball: Union 54, Skyview 39

Union used a 9-0 run to start the fourth quarter on its way to scoring 24 over the final eight minutes for a 54-39 victory over Skyview in Tuesday’s 4A Greater St. Helens League girls basketball game.
The Titans (12-4, 3-1) led 30-27 after three quarters before using its defense to force five turnovers the first three minutes that aided its 9-0 scoring run on their way to taking their first double digit lead of the game at 39-27.
