Wreckage found off Cape Canaveral linked to lost French colony of Fort Caroline

A private treasure salvage company says it’s found a shipwreck, buried in sand under the ocean off Cape Canaveral, that could be linked to the lost French colony of Fort Caroline.
Global Marine Exploration Inc. has discovered scattered evidence of a historic wreck that includes some tantalizing clues: three French bronze cannons, at least one of which has markings from the time of the colony, and a French granite monument adorned with that country’s coat of arms.

 

St. Johns County opens compressed natural gas fueling facility for county vehicles

The use of natural gas increased across the First Coast as St. Johns County opened a compressed natural gas fueling facility for the county’s public works department.
The new CNG fueling station opened Wednesday at the St. Johns County Public Works compound on Florida 16 and Industry Center Road. The CNG will be used in 130 county fleet vehicles that are being converted for natural gas use.

Police report: Student who brought gun to Mandarin school was having trouble with other kids

A student who came forward to school officials at Mandarin High on Tuesday saying he had a gun in his car on campus had his first court appearance Wednesday morning, according to Times-Union news partner First Coast News.
A police report released Wednesday shows the student flagged down the school's resource officer and told him he wanted to "come clean."

St. Johns County voting machines get final test before election

Before any vote is cast in St. Johns County, workers at the local Supervisor of Elections office checked every piece of equipment to make sure every ballot counts — assuming each one is valid and properly filled out.
On Tuesday morning at the office just off State Road 16, Supervisor of Elections Vicky Oakes and her staff completed the final test of voting machines before early voting begins Saturday.
It was a public test required by state law, but there was no crowd gathered at the door.

 

Tech Coast Conference in Jacksonville draws about 800 to technology showcase event Wednesday

About 800 people are expected to attend the third annual Tech Coast Conference at the Prime Osborn Convention Center in downtown Jacksonville Wednesday.
This year’s event, organized by the JAX Chamber Information Technology Council, is anticipated to be a pivotal point in the event’s short history. The conference running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. has about double the amount of participants than the first year’s event in 2014.

 

JTA mechanic arrested, accused of using company parts to repair personal vehicle

A Jacksonville Transportation Authority employee is accused of stealing parts and paint from the transit agency to use to repair a vehicle for at least one customer in his personal garage, according to his arrest report.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office arrested mechanic Charles Mason Thursday. He is charged with one count of grand theft of up to $5,000, a third-degree felony.
