Driver arrested after train hits car in San Marco

Jacksonville police arrested a driver for driving under the influence and other traffic offenses after a train hit a car stuck on the railroad tracks in San Marco early Saturday.
The driver, whose name wasn’t released immediately, had fled the car before it was hit shortly before 5 a.m. on the tracks at San Marco Boulevard and Gary Street near Baptist Medical Center, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Jacksonville police investigating possible overdose death at restaurant

Jacksonville police are investigating the death of an unidentified man found inside a bathroom stall early Saturday at Blackfinn Ameripub restaurant at the Markets at Town Center, 4840 Big Island Drive.
The victim, who appeared to be in his mid-30s, had no identification. He was found about 2:15 a.m. inside the stall by a crew cleaning up after closing time, said Sgt. Jay Farhat of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Van Zant's accuser changes plagiarism claim but won't back down on fraud allegation

A Clay County teacher and former principal Friday partially retracted her recent accusation that Clay Superintendent Charlie Van Zant Jr. had plagiarized her work for his master’s paper, but she doubled-down on her other assertion that he ignored warnings that some principals were fraudulently mislabeling students as disabled.

Jaguars, city break ground on Daily's Place, new amphitheater and flex field

Although ground was broken late this spring and the project is well underway, the Jaguars and City of Jacksonville held an official ceremony this morning for the amphitheater and covered flex field adjacent to EverBank Field.
The venue will be called Daily’s Place; the Jacksonville-based convenience, has purchased the naming rights.
The first phase of the project is complete – a new entrance to the playing field behind the south end zone.

 

First Coast unemployment shows uptick for second straight month, state figure holds steady

Florida’s unemployment rate held steady in July while the First Coast jobless figure showed a slight uptick for the second month in a row.
The unemployment rate for the First Coast area increased from 4.8 percent in June to 4.9 percent in July according to figures released Friday by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity. That rate is before seasonal adjustments that take summer factors into account such as students on summer break seeking employment. The First Coast area includes Duval, St. Johns, Nassau, Clay and Baker counties.
