Traffic Alert: 3-car accident shuts down northbound I-295 near I-10

All northbound lanes of Interstate 295 at Interstate 10 are closed due to a three-vehicle accident, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Emergency vehicles are on I-295 West near the Normandy Boulevard and Wilson Boulevard exits as they join the Highway Patrol handling the accident that saw one person ejected, according to fire officials.
The Wilson Boulevard/Exit 17 on-ramp is closed due to those rescue vehicles, according to the Florida Department of Transportation.

 

Stroke does strike young people, Jacksonville woman had one at 27

Bethany Fonseca had a stroke in October 2014.
She was just 27.
“I was completely shocked, but it made me look back on the warning signs I had before, the warning signs I just shoved off as if nothing was wrong,” she said.
Only later did Fonseca find out that she had multiple risk factors for stroke: birth control pills, history of migraine headaches and a then-undiscovered hole in her heart.

Jacksonville's Legacy of Care celebrates 10-year anniversary

In her work as an advanced registered nurse practitioner, Lolita Massengill saw far too many people who could not afford health care.
So in 2006 she founded Legacy of Care, a nonprofit that runs an all-volunteer, by-appointment free clinic in the Panama Park area of Jacksonville, just south of the Trout River. The second Saturday morning of every month, 30 or so doctors, nurses, other health-care practitioners and other volunteers converge to provide primary care for uninsured patients from 9 a.m. until all patients are seen, usually 1 or 2 p.m.

The county involvement depends on how many people end up supporting the group, which formed in 2014 to give African-Americans a bigger influence with elected officials in the city of St. Augustine.

Olympian Michelle Kwan to campaign for Hillary Clinton in Jacksonville, St. Augustine

Olympic figure skater Michelle Kwan will campaign in Northeast Florida for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton on Wednesday and Thursday.
Kwan will speak on college campuses about Clinton’s college affordability plan, which according to the campaign would allow 175,000 Florida students to obtain a four-year college degree with no tuition.

Jacksonville Sports Council raising money to honor military families at Navy-Notre Dame game

The Jacksonville Sports Council is honoring members of the military by providing a game-day experience for 3,000 to 5,000 heroes and their families for the Nov. 5 football game at EverBank Field between Navy and Notre Dame.
Although the Naval Academy is playing in the game, all branches of the military will be eligible for the ticket packages, said Rick Catlett, president and CEO of the Sports Council.

Florida Theatre undergoes restoration project expected to last six months

Scaffolding will cover the stone facade of the historic Florida Theatre in downtown Jacksonville for approximately six months as the building undergoes a long-awaited restoration on its terracotta finishes.
Despite the construction, shows will go on and business will not be impacted. According to the performing arts center, more than 50 events are scheduled at the theatre during the expected construction period.

School Board says Superintendent Nikolai Vitti's goals for academics aren't aggressive enough

Members of Duval County’s School Board Tuesday rejected Superintendent Nikolai Vitti’s latest set of academic goals for strategic planning, saying his numeric targets for the next three years are not aggressive enough.
One board member called his projections for proficiency depressing.
