A 44-year-old Cary man was hospitalized and charged with DUI Friday after driving his pick-up truck off a 12-foot retaining wall, according to Cary police. Officers were dispatched at around 10:26 p.m. to the area of Jewel-Osco, 696 W. Northwest Hwy., due to a driving complaint. Police were advised that a male customer – Keith Whippie of Cary – appeared to be intoxicated and was leaving the parking lot in a blue pickup truck, according to a release from the Cary Police Department. After being notified that the truck was heading eastbound through the Cary Square Shopping Center parking lot, police received additional calls that the truck had driven off a retaining wall near Feinberg Drive. Police discovered that the truck had jumped a curb and sidewalk, ran through a fence, and crashed off the roughly 12-foot wall near 8000 Feinberg Ct. Whippie, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was taken to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, where he was treated and released. Whippie is charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a blood-alcohol content greater than 0.08 percent and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
