Capitol Renovation Project May Worsen Parking Problems

By Phil Kabler With renovations to Building 3 and governor's mansion security enhancements set to get underway this year, parking problems at the Capitol complex could get worse. Acting Administration Secretary Jason Pizatella told the Capitol Building Commission those projects will eliminate as many as to 56 parking spaces on campus.Bid opening for the contract for the long-delayed renovation of Building 3 is set for March 26, and depending on which of three bid specifications is awarded, the project will eliminate between 16 and 32 parking spaces on the north side of the office building, Pizatella said. One design calls for construction of a one-story pavilion on the northwest side of the eight-story office building, which would house a loading dock and an emergency generator. That would eliminate a total of 32 spaces leased to Capitol employees, and four metered spaces, although four spaces would be converted into handicapped parking, he said. The lost leased spaces will be moved to nearby spaces that currently have parking meters, he said."We find that when the Legislature is not in session, the metered spaces that are there go unused," he said. Also, Pizatella said a project to enhance security around the governor's mansion by installing a brick wall and an eight-foot perimeter space will eliminate 24 parallel parking spaces on Kanawha Boulevard adjacent to the mansion. Those spaces are assigned to the House of Delegates during legislative sessions.
