LOS ANGELES (AP) — One of the nation's largest trucking companies will pay nearly $400,000 in penalties and other costs because dozens of its diesel rigs in California lacked proper pollution control devices. Clean air regulators announced the penalty Thursday for Virginia-based Estes Express Lines. Federal and state air quality officials say 73 of the 500 trucks that Estes operates in California lacked technology to filter out small particles that can exacerbate asthma and heart disease. The company will pay a $100,000 penalty and spend about $300,000 more on anti-pollution efforts. Estes didn't return a telephone call requesting comment.
