Griffin was arrested in March 2014, five months after a new state law took effect that decriminalized placement of students in schools outside their home district. Court records show that Miller forged juvenile court documents to gain custody of the Bridgeport teen and enroll her in the school. The woman told the district the student was her niece, but the girl’s biological mother said the only tie between the two was that their daughters were dating, according to an arrest warrant. The biological mother, who lives with her husband in Bridgeport, told authorities in October 2013 that she had been in contact with her daughter mostly by telephone for the previous year and did know she had been living in Brookfield. In 2011, a homeless woman, Tanya McDowell, was charged with first-degree larceny for sending her child to a public elementary school in Norwalk despite living in Bridgeport. Griffin’s previous public defender and the state’s attorney who prosecuted the case did not return calls seeking comment Wednesday. Five days before her sentencing in Danbury Superior Court, Griffin was sentenced to 12 years in prison for setting her mother’s Stratford home on fire in May 2013 so they could share the insurance money.
