After losing his mother to breast cancer, Lavar Jacobs, 29, of Akron decided to channel some of his grief into something positive.He started a nonprofit organization called Not Just October in memory of his mom, Kim Jacobs.“I want to expand people’s knowledge about breast cancer. I think if we as a family had known more about the disease and mammograms and early detection, we could have urged Mom to get checked out,” he said.“I know now that breast cancer awareness is important all year round, and not just during the month of October — the official month designated for breast cancer awareness.
