(AP) — Thirteen-year-old Nicholas Dillon's screams could be heard throughout his pitch black house when the earth shook and the falling bricks hit him. Nicholas was having a sleepover with a friend, who wasn't hurt, and had pulled a mattress into the living room to sleep. "When I heard him screaming and yelling and I couldn't reach him and couldn't see where he was," she told the Chronicle. Nicholas said he thinks he escaped greater injury or death because he tried scooting toward the door when the shaking started. With phones out, his grandfather ran to a fire station and paramedics eventually came to take him to a local hospital before he was flown to University of California, Davis Children's Hospital, where he underwent nearly 10 hours of surgery.
