The sound of mechanical work was constant throughout Texas Tech’s United Supermarkets Arena Friday as students were in action working on robots in preparation for the regional FIRST Robotics Competition. “(Students) have been working hard, but as with anything, I know there is a lot of stuff that you are still learning and preparing for,” Coronado engineering and robotics teacher Nancy Schunke said of her rookie team, “but they are working really hard on getting their robot done and figuring out how they are going to look on gameday and preparing the control board and all kind of different things.” Local school districts and teams from New Mexico, Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Mexico and Brazil will compete Saturday in the FIRST Robotics Competition Hub City Regional in Lubbock at the United Supermarkets Arena. According to its website, FIRST is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to inspiring young people to be science and technology leaders by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering, and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities, including self-confidence, communication, and leadership. According to a news release from the host organization, the FIRST Robotics Competition is a program meant to challenge high school students to design and build a robot to contend in competitions that measure effectiveness of each robot and student collaboration and determination.
