Beaumont ISD's pool was damaged during Tropical Storm Harvey while undergoing minor plaster repairs, the district said. Before the storm, the natatorium was drained to prepare for cleaning and plaster repair in "certain small areas," spokeswoman Nakisha Burns said. The project's contractors were from Houston and were unable to return to Beaumont when Harvey first hit the city, leaving the pool empty during the storm. "The amount of rain and floodwaters saturated the ground and caused the pool to move ever-so-slightly," Burns said, and the plaster separated in some places.
