aBeaumont ISD's administration and board of managers on Monday agreed to seek a state designation that allows them to opt out of certain requirements, saying they want to make limited changes. "My motivation for this is the school calendar," Superintendent John Frossard said. By state law, the district can't start classes before the fourth Monday in August, but Districts of Innovation can opt to start earlier, which many did, some starting as early as the second Monday in August. "If we don't, it puts us at a huge competitive disadvantage," Frossard said, because those districts have more instructional days before the state's standardized tests, which are factored into academic accountability ratings.
