Bethel Officials Consider Options For Police Station

The long-delayed project, which calls for a new building for the police department adjacent to Bethel High School at Judd Avenue and Whittlesey Drive, lost by 69 votes of the nearly 1,800 cast in the referendum. The latest cuts come primarily from downgrading the quality of the proposed materials, such as switching the gutters from copper to aluminum, changing two-thirds of the exterior of the proposed building from brick to concrete, and removing 20 spaces from the parking lot. Supporters of the effort say the 1974 facility is too small, has asbestos in the walls and ceiling, often becomes flooded during heavy rain and does not comply with environmental regulations. Infurchia submitted a report to town officials earlier this year with data he compiled on 13 police buildings in neighboring towns. Bethel resident Bryan Terzian, a police captain in Ridgefield, urged the boards to act quickly.
