HONG KONG — Forty-five ex-lawmakers and activists were sentenced to four to 10 years in prison Tuesday in Hong Kong’s biggest national security case under a Beijing-imposed law that crushed a once-thriving pro-democracy movement.
They were tried under the 2020 national security law for their roles in an unofficial primary election.
While the U. S. presidential contest was decided fairly quickly—with the Associated Press calling Donald Trump’s victory over Kamala Harris early Wednesday, Nov. 6, the morning after voters headed to the polls—in a number of downballot races, two weeks after Election Day, a clear winner has yet to emerge.
Republicans have already secured control of both chambers of Congress, but the margins of their majorities aren’t set.
In the House, the AP has yet to call five races—as of the end of Mon., Nov.
PHILADELPHIA — Cale Makar is the ultimate weapon when another team tries to park the bus.
It took the Colorado Avalanche a while to find a way through against the Philadelphia Flyers, but eventually, Makar scored twice in a 3-2 win Monday night at Wells Fargo Center.

Victims and mothers of those killed in the mass shooting at an LGBTQ+ nightclub in Colorado Springs in 2022 have filed lawsuits alleging that the murders could’ve been prevented if the sheriff’s office used the state’s red flag law after clear warning signs that the gunman intended to commit violence.
The plaintiffs in the two lawsuits, filed Sunday, include survivor Barrett Hudson, who still has three bullets in his body from that night, and other victims and relatives.
An Aurora man was sentenced to 48 years in prison after he was found guilty of second-degree murder for fatally shooting his mother, the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office said Monday.
Ryan Scott Avery, 42, was arrested in June 2021 after his mother, 70-year-old Deborah Avery, was found dead in her home in the 1600 block of South Granby Street.
Ryan Avery, who also lived in the house, was accused of shooting his mother three times in the face and chest as she sat in a recliner in the family room.
PHILADELPHIA — NHL referee Mitch Dunning is fully communicative and can move all his extremities following a violent collision with Colorado defenseman Josh Manson in Monday night’s game at Philadelphia.
The NHL said Dunning was taken to a hospital for precautionary reasons and that all neurological signs are normal.
Manson skated alone on the ice when he slammed into Dunning near the blue line early in the first period.
