Aunt Bill's Brown Candy Remains A Local Favorite For The Holidays

By Dave Cathey Food Editor dcathey@oklahoman.comThe tradition began Dec. 10, 1928, when Edna Vance Adams, writing under the pseudonym Aunt Susan, originated by her predecessor Susan Abercrombie, published a recipe for Aunt Bill's Brown Candy. Perhaps it was a letter she received the following year that inspired her to share the holiday candy recipe again: “One new housekeeper tells me she made that grand candy of yours last year for her lover and now since this same chap is her new husband she wants to feed him on it in their own little new home so won't I please tell her again how to make Aunt Bill's brown candy.” Whatever the reason, Adams reprinted the recipe in December 1929, and for all of the 15 years she was a columnist for The Oklahoman.
