A nuclear reactor at  Three Mile Island, the site of the worst-ever nuclear incident in the United States, is set to be activated for the first time in five years after its owners secured an exclusive deal with Microsoft to sell power to the tech giant.  Microsoft wants a clean energy source to fuel its AI ambitions so it has turned to the Pennsylvania site with terms agreed on a 20-year plan, commencing in 2028 once essential upgrades have been completed at Three Mile Island.  The project is supported by President Biden’s climate bill but is subject to final approval from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Microsoft believes the time is right to land this strategic resource, given the vast computational demands of AI development and deployment, including power-hungry data centers.  On Friday, site owners Constellation Energy confirmed its Unit 1 reactor, shut down since 2019, will be the source of energy for the tech giant but stressed it was fully independent of the adjacent unit responsible for the high-profile incident five decades ago. Australia’s financial regulator is outlining fresh plans to require cryptocurrency firms to be licensed under the country’s corporate law. This goes beyond the need for crypto exchanges solely to be licensed, in an extension of the existing framework. As reported by the Australian Financial Review (AFR), the new guidelines are desired as the regulator takes the position that the Corporations Act captures most crypto assets such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) commissioner Alan Kirkland set out the plans on Monday at the AFR Crypto Crypto and Digital Assets summit in Sydney.  An update to ‘Information Paper 225’ of the Corporations Act will be issued by November, to address how particular crypto tokens and related commodities should be regulated. The draft guidance will be opened to the industry for feedback and consultation. “ASIC’s message is that a significant number of crypto-asset firms in the Australian market are likely to need a license under the current law,” Commissioner Kirkland told the AFR. He added, “ASIC believes that licensing and its subsequent protections will mitigate risk while bolstering consumer confidence and market integrity – two elements that are crucial in encouraging innovation in the financial system.” Senator slates Australian regulator’s lack of progress Australian authorities are increasingly cautious of the prevalent risks associated with crypto assets. Last month, ASIC announced the takedown of more than 7,300 scam websites since July 2023, with 615 of those related to cryptocurrency.  In an address to the AFR event in Sydney, Liberal Senator Andrew Bragg blasted regulators for not maintaining progress as a bellwether for the evolving sector.  He stated Australia “has gone from crypto leader to crypto laggard” over the last two and half years. A university study has revealed 10% of young men in the United States display behavior indicating a gambling problem, compared to just 3% of the general population.  Authored by Dan Cassino, a professor of government and politics at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey, the survey polled 801 participants nationwide.  Cassino highlighted the perils of betting online compared to other forms when he noted, “Gambling is generally marketed as entertainment, and for most gamblers, it’s just that.

Apple’s former designer Jony Ive and OpenAI’s CEO are reportedly collaborating on a new AI product built by Sam Altman. According to a profile by The New York Times, the pair met for dinner several times “before agreeing to build a product,” with Ive’s company, LoveFrom, leading the design. The report claims that it could raise up to $1 billion in start-up funding by the end of the year from tech investors.
