Asbestos fibers found in some crayons, toys from China Asbestos fibers were found in some Chinese-made crayons and powder from children’s crime-scene fingerprint kits purchased at Bay Area stores, according to a study released Wednesday by an environmental health advocacy organization. The substance was found in four of the 28 boxes of crayons and two of the 21 kids’ fingerprinting kits purchased online and at stores in the East Bay, said the Environmental Working Group. The crayons were labeled with such popular characters as Disney’s Mickey Mouse and Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Environmental health advocates said there is no safe level of exposure to asbestos, a group of naturally occurring minerals with microscopic fibers. The fibers can accumulate in the lungs and have been linked to cancer and other health problems. “The right number of children’s toys that should be contaminated with a carcinogen is zero,” said Sonya Lunder, lead author of the study and senior analyst with the Environmental Working Group, which is based in Washington, D.C., and has offices in Oakland. The group purchased the products in March and April and said it had sent them to an accredited laboratory for testing. Some brands of crayons and toy fingerprint kits have been found to contain asbestos in previous tests. The toys contained talcum, a mineral found alongside asbestos in mines. A 2000 report found asbestos in several crayons, including those made by the U.S.
