WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department is directing its federal prosecutors to investigate any state or local officials who stand in the way of beefed-up enforcement of immigration laws under the Trump administration, according to a memo to the entire workforce obtained by The Associated Press on Wednesday.
The memo, written by acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove, also instructs the Justice Department’s civil division to help identify state and local laws and policies that “threaten to impede” the Trump administration’s immigration initiatives and potentially challenge them in court.

A U. S. Border Patrol agent who was killed in Vermont during a traffic stop near the Canadian border was a military veteran who worked security duty at the Pentagon during the time of the Sept. 11 attacks, his family said.
“He was a devoted agent who served with honor and bravery,” a family statement provided to The Associated Press late Tuesday said.
Can we be too excited for Billy Idol as he brings his 2025 tour to South Florida?
The veteran rocker — he’ll turn 70 this year — just announced a 31-show run called It’s a Nice Day to … Tour Again! with fellow ‘80s rock icons Joan Jett & the Blackhearts.
A trail of blood at the murder scene — and the absence of it on the accused killer’s clothes — show it is impossible for Florida death row inmate Tommy Zeigler to have killed his wife and in-laws on Christmas Eve 1975, his lawyers assert in a new court filing.
Fresh DNA analysis of dozens of pieces of evidence instead supports Zeigler’s story of walking in on a burglary that turned deadly at his family’s furniture store in Winter Garden, his lawyers say, and provides enough reasonable doubt to overturn his convictions.
The results could upend what Orange County prosecutors told Zeigler’s 1976 jury: that Zeigler, who is white, shot and killed his wife, mother-in-law and father-in-law, then lured three Black men to the store to blame them for the murders.
