A story that ran in the April 11, 1982, edition of The World-Herald explored the trend of women taking apprenticeships in careers that were usually reserved for men. Equipment operator Sylvia Odvody was a mother of three who made quick work of learning how to operate bulldozers and payloaders. After all, the 39-year-old “was raised on a farm near Fremont and already knew how to drive a tractor.”
