A Byrnes High School alumnus is leading an effort to change the school’s Rebel nickname. Terry Moore, a former Byrnes football player, has asked the West Spartanburg chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People to request a change of the school’s nickname. Barbara Jones, president of the West Spartanburg NAACP, said the organization’s board will make a decision on the issue during a meeting next Monday night. “He brought it to me a couple of weeks ago,” Jones said.
