The oppressive Florida summer heat will leave a lasting impression on Cori Adams. The 17-year-old, along with 11 other high school students, traveled from northwest Alaska to Ocala to attend Camp Patriot, a basketball camp at the College of Central Florida this week. “It’s hard to breathe when you’re outside, but all the buildings have air conditioning,” said Cori, who lives in the village of Noatak, which has a population about 500 people in what is referred to as the NANA region of the state. Where the teens are from, the temperature rarely breaks 70 degrees in the summer and can get as cold as 40 below zero in the winter. “It’s really hot here,” said Melvin Sheldon, a 17-year-old from the village of Ambler, population about 300. The program through which the students came to Ocala is sponsored by Teck Resources, the operator of the Red Dog mine in the NANA area.
