This year’s inaugural Akron Marathon Rubber City Race Series will benefit 15 local nonprofit organizations as part of the 2-15 Blue Line Charity Program.More charities were chosen this year than in previous years because of an “overwhelming number of applicants,” said Katie Kline, Akron Marathon project manager.“These partners reflect the mission of the Akron Marathon Charitable Corporation through their work in the community, and we are happy to have them participate in the program,” she said in a prepared statement. The program is centered around the marquee event in September, which involves 15,000 runners, 3,000 volunteers and nearly 100,000 spectators, giving the charities a large promotional audience. This year’s charity partners are:Akron Area YMCA, Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, Alzheimer’s Association of Greater East Ohio Area Chapter, Boys & Girls Club of the Western Reserve, Catholic Charities, Child Guidance and Family Solutions, Ears to You Inc., Family Promise of Summit County, Girls on the Run of Greater Summit, Haslinger Family Pediatric Palliative Care Center, Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition, Patriot Runners, Trample ALS, Victory Gallop and Wheels4Change.The groups are permitted to use the Akron Marathon, Half Marathon or Team Relay as a fundraiser for their respective cause.
