Akron can award bonus points for fire promotions to military veterans, Summit County Common Pleas Court Judge Todd McKenney ruled Tuesday. This decision removed what may be the last impediment to the promotion of 45 firefighters to lieutenant. McKenney’s decision was in line with a previous, preliminary ruling he had made that said Akron could give points for military service, but not for residency.“Nothing has changed from that ruling,” said Chief Ed Hiltbrand. The Akron fire union challenged the city’s plan to award 20 bonus points each for both military service and residency, bonuses that were included in a charter change in 2010.
