Born Steven Paul Smith in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1969, the "folk-punk" singer-songwriter was a member of the band Heatmiser. The use of his songs in the movie "Good Will Hunting" brought him mainstream recognition, as well as a Best Original Song Academy Award nomination for "Miss Misery." Smith released six full-length solo albums; the last, "From a Basement on the Hill," was released posthumously, as was "New Moon," a two-disc compilation of rare and unreleased songs recorded during his time with the Kill Rock Stars label.
