Howl, a roguish magician, rescues Sophie, a naive hat maker, from the clutches of the Witch of the Waste's goons, literally sweeping her off of her feet. However, when the witch visits Sophie to inquire about their adventure, she casts a spell turning the young Sophie into a 90-year-old woman. Desperately wanting to break the curse, Sophie ventures out into the countryside seeking Howl but instead happens upon Markl and Calcifer who work together to find the solutions they seek.
