80-megawatt Solar Facility Coming To Accomack County

(AP) — Accomack County soon could be home to the largest solar energy facility on the East Coast, after county officials approved a conditional use permit and rezoning to accommodate the project. "[...] this is a net loss for Accomack County," said Supervisor Grayson Chesser, who said the company will not pay the county tax on equipment because of a provision in state law. Community Energy has been in the alternative energy business for 15 years and has completed some two dozen solar and wind energy facilities totaling more than 100 megawatts in eight states, with three additional projects similar in size to the proposed Accomack County one underway now. Real estate taxes paid by landowners leasing to the company will be about six times higher than when the land was in agricultural use, according to Accomack County Planning Director Rich Morrison.
