Value stocks are typically older stocks which have a ticker price closer to the actual current value of the company. Historically value stocks have had better returns than growth stocks. But for the last 10 or so years growth stocks have done better. At some point value will return to dominance, if it hasn't already done so.

If a stock has been increasing it's dividend for years and the average yield for 20 years has been 3% but is suddenly 2%, yeah, you can look at other #s to confirm it's overpriced...but most likely that first piece of basic math already showed it was.
