Some 240 years and nine generations ago, an ancestor of soon-to-be Jacksonville sixth-grader Alex McLaurine was in on an historic event. Monday, Alex, 11, did something he thought was “pretty cool,” to honor what distant grandfather Thomas Heyward Jr. was a part of in 1776. Heyward, the son of a South Carolina plantation owner, was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. read more
