With Florida ranking fourth in the nation for prescription medication spending, residents are scrambling to find innovative ways to reduce their costs.
Last year, prices increases for more than 4,200 drugs with an average hike of about 15%, according to Definitive Healthcare, a healthcare data analytics company. Floridians living with cancer, prediabetes or diabetes, and heart disease incur some of the highest out-of-pocket costs for medications.
Most Floridians are quick to admit drugs developed over the past 20 years have improved their lives, but the costs make it difficult for some to keep taking those life-saving drugs.
Research shows when consumers encounter shocking prices at the pharmacy counter, they often walk away without their prescription.
“Drug costs ranked higher as a concern for our members than housing costs, and that says a lot in Florida,” said Jeff Johnson, state director of AARP Florida.

He also collaborated with James Taylor, Bob Seger, Bonnie Raitt and many more, and also found success as a solo artist.
DEAR MISS MANNERS: My husband and I, along with a friend, purchased hard-to-get opera tickets. We’ve looked forward to attending for many months.
However, we just learned that our companion intends to bring her extremely unruly “comfort” poodle — not only to the opera, but also to a lovely restaurant for dinner beforehand.
This dog is hyperactive and annoying; it is not a service animal that our friend needs for seeing or hearing.
Now that we know the dog is going, we want to bow out of the engagement, but would prefer to do it in the least hurtful way.
Delays in the federal probe into what caused the deadly Champlain Towers South condo collapse in 2021 mean a draft report on the findings is now expected in 2026, a year later than previously estimated.
In a Sept. 12 update, an investigative team with the National Institute of Standards and Technology said a variety of challenges related to testing, obtaining documents and interviewing witnesses have slowed down the process.
“Unfortunately, we have faced technical and programmatic delays that have caused us to adjust our timeline,” said lead investigator Judith Mitrani-Reiser.

The Jupiter resident who was arrested in July after making threatening social media posts about Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and his vice presidential nominee JD Vance entered into a pre-trial diversion program Tuesday, potentially avoiding a formal conviction.
Michael M. Wiseman, 68, was arrested by Jupiter Police on one count of written threats to kill or do bodily harm, a second-degree felony, after multiple people reported to police his social media posts, according to a probable cause affidavit.
An officer found several posts on Wiseman’s public Facebook and Threads accounts posted in the days after the July 13 attempted assassination of Trump that “praised” the shooting and “were encouraging in nature for others to attempt the same,” the affidavit said.
Wiseman posted on July 17: “Some people need to be better shots if they know they are going to kill a monster.” One post from July 18 showed a photo of Trump “in the crosshairs of a sniper scope” that said, “READY, AIM, FIRE.
