Volcanic Ash and Volcanic Dust | Photos, Satellite Images, More
This low density, combined with the very small particle size, allows volcanic ash to be carried high into the atmosphere by an eruption and carried long distances by the wind. Volcanic ash can cause problems a long distance from the erupting volcano. Volcanic ash particles are insoluble in water.
Volcanic Cloud Monitoring -- NOAA/CIMSS
The NOAA/CIMSS Volcanic Cloud Monitoring web site features near real-time processing of many geostationary and low-earth orbit satellites covering much of the globe. The content within the web site is a result of NOAA funded Volcanic Ash research projects led by NOAA scientist Michael Pavolonis.
Volcanic Ash - National Geographic Society
Volcanic ash is a mixture of rock, mineral, and glass particles expelled from a volcano during a volcanic eruption. The particles are very small—less than two millimeters in diameter. They tend to be pitted and full of holes, which gives them a low density.Along with water vapor and other hot gases, volcanic ash is part of the dark ash column that rises above a volcano when it erupts.
Human and Environmental Impacts of Volcanic Ash
The 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajökull, Iceland, produced an ash cloud that forced the cancelation of roughly 100,000 flights and affected 7 million passengers, costing the aviation industry an estimated $2.6 billion. Volcanic ash can impact the infrastructure of entire communities and regions.
